History
The very unique, Coachmans Cottage was built in the 1840s to house the coachmen and his family working on the estate. The extent of the stables opposite the Cottage indicate the importance of the Coachman on the estate, caring for the horses for the Archer family, and the working horses who pulled the carriages, horses to pump the water from the river and horses to grind the apples, as well as riding horses.
The design of the Coachman’s Cottage continues the picturesque theme of the main house and stables but is much more simple in its detailing reflecting its lesser importance in the hierarchy of the estate. It does, however, give an insight into the status of the coachman compared to the other workers’ cottages. You to can now enjoy staying at this unique and special cottage, and imagine its former inhabitants and dreams of years gone past.
